Steve was born and grew up in Dunstable. He now lives with his wife and daughter in Harpenden. He started karate when he was 15 and attained black belt at 19. Steve has been with Bukonkai from white belt to the present day. His training and examinations up to 3rdDan was under the founder of Bukonkai Karate International, the late Sensei Colin Williams 7th Dan. Steve has only studied and trained in one martial art, Shotokan Karate.
Steve has always shown a keen interest in competitions, although he has always believed that competitions play a very small part in a person’s karate ability and development. Steve qualified as a Karate Judge at the age of 22 and then became the first qualified Karate Referee in the South of England Region at the age of 23.
He has competed or refereed in the BKI National Championships every year since starting karate in 1987. He has often taken first place in the Senior Black Belt Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) in the BKI championships. He has also represented Bukonkai as part of the BKI British squad including competing overseas, including captaining the winning team Team Kumite in the first ever Malta Open in 2004.

Steve has also received professional training in Shiatsu (a traditional oriental health treatment which works on the body’s energy channels and pressure points) from the European Shiatsu Society. Steve is also interested in many sports, and remaining as healthy and fit as possible.
Steve has run Bukonkai’s karate club in Dunstable for over 15 years. The club is very friendly, and has a healthy mix of adults, children, men and women. Steve has taken many students to black belt, two students to 2nd Dan, and one student to 3rd Dan. Steve immensely enjoys teaching and helping people and is always pleased to see new faces at his club.
